Epainette Nomaka Mbeki (née Moerane), known as MaMbeki, was born in February 1916 in Mangoloaneng, in the Sotho-speaking section of the Mount Fletcher district of Transkei.  MaMbeki’s family, the Moeranes, are Basotho members of the elite Bafokeng clan. Her parents, Christians active in the Catholic Church, were successful peasant farmers strongly committed to securing the best available schooling for their children. Piny, as her friends and family called her, had moved from the nearby boarding school at Mariazell to Lovedale and then to Adams College Amanzimtoti, near Durban, Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal) where she completed her teacher training.

  1. Yes, she deserves the special official funeral. She has done many good things to other people,especially to the community in her village of Ngcingwane. Mambeki was both a social and political activist, choosing to live amongst the people and continuing to fight for the upliftment of the poorest of the poor through her various community projects.
    She endured the unimaginable sacrifice of spending well over two decades of her living like a widow while her husband was in Robben Island, in pursuit of freedom for all in our motherland.
    She was always rooted in the struggle of her people and actively organised and assisted men and women in her Eastern Cape community, sometimes out of her own pocket.
